Painting my journey in 3D let me tell my story better. It was a new experience for me. I usually work in 2D to describe my personal journey. This time, I wanted to paint myself from the inside out. I wanted to capture my essence, pivotal memories, and significant experiences. A flat canvas just wasn’t going to cut it. I had to work in 3D. I had to listen to my “inner artist” and silence voices screaming for me to be traditional. Lastly, I wanted to express the liminal nature of "me.” I wanted to communicate how, in my soul, I am my past, present, and future. This required portals: doors, sky, air, water, and a way to move in and out of a space. This made experimenting with 2D and 3D expressions of these gateways wholly necessary. This is my “old style” mixed with a new execution. I used a “Lift the Flap” baby board book as my canvas for the first time. The flaps and doors that open and close let the viewer move through many moments on my journey: moments that have happened, are happening, and are to come. Doing this three dimensionally creates an awareness of time shifting and changing: a liminal experience.  I’m planning to continue painting my journey in 3D. It’s an awesome opportunity to be mindful of all the facets of the creative journey. Our experience isn’t flat. It’s full and round and deep. I love that I can reach into my experiences, pull them open, and spin them around. It's more like my true spiritual experience. I am more fully aware of my past, present, and future when I consider all the possibilities that time and space allow. My present moment is richer for it. How can your story be described in 3D? How can painting your journey in 3D tell your story better? Creative expression is 2D is wonderful, but 3D gives you a fresh chance to explore your journey in a new way. If you are brave and curious enough to try it, please share about what you create. Do it here at Journey on Canvas Blog. This is a sculpture that is made from an altered baby board book. It has been painted and collaged to become a 3D representation of the artist’s journey. The book can be spun on its stand.
I painted my way through my personal journey. I have included Yesterday, Right Now, and Tomorrow all at once. The flaps and doors that open and close let the viewer move through space, time, and place. Doing this three dimensionally creates an awareness of time shifting and changing: a liminal experience.

Tears for Dancing, Age 42

The older I get the less I think about what I can get out of this life. Bad things happen here on Earth and no one is immune. I see my parents suffering, I watch terrible things happen to my friends and I see catastrophic events that create hell on Earth. Revelation 21:4 promises that someday God will wipe every tear from our eyes and the old order of things will pass away. I’m beginning to think that this promise isn’t so far away: it’s just waiting for us at the next stop. Maybe when we die we trade our tears for dancing and enter Heaven. Until then, I'm going to paint, I'm going to write, and I'm going to share when I find hope in this life. That's why I'm here at Journey on Canvas.
