Finding Solace in Creativity during recovery from any medical ordeal can be a daunting journey, often filled with moments of discomfort and a longing for normalcy. In my case, the past two weeks post-hospitalization have been particularly challenging. Not only have I been grappling with significant pain – an unwelcome companion – but also with the restrictions it placed on my lifestyle. As someone who finds joy and energy in exercising, being confined and unable to indulge in rejuvenating activities, I felt like a part of me was on hold. Restlessness was creeping in as both sitting and lying down became increasingly uncomfortable.   However, in this carousel of discomfort and monotony, I found a source of relief and hope – art making. The process of creating something with my hands, directing my focus away from the pain, became my sanctuary. I began with a simple project: crafting a funky box and filling it with a little light. This symbolic act of placing light inside something I created wasn't just about art; it was a metaphor for the inner light of hope and resilience, faintly glowing within me. As I worked on this project, I found myself feeling more hopeful, sensing a gentle but steady resurgence of optimism and strength. Each day, as a little more light worked its way into my life, the end of this challenging period seemed increasingly within reach. Finding solace in creativity during recovery was possible for me.   Now, as I continue this journey of recovery and creation, I am more grateful than ever for the gift of the creative process, a divine endowment that has been my anchor through these turbulent times. With each new day, as I contemplate what to create next, my excitement builds, signaling not just a return to physical health but also a profound healing of the spirit. This shift from merely enduring each day to eagerly anticipating the act of creation marks a significant milestone in my journey. It reassures me that even in our darkest times, creativity can be a powerful beacon, guiding us back to light and life. As we journey, creatives are finding solace in creativity. Recovery is possible through creative process.

tears for dancing

Tears for Dancing, Age 42

The older I get the less I think about what I can get out of this life. Bad things happen here on Earth and no one is immune. I see my parents suffering, I watch terrible things happen to my friends and I see catastrophic events that create hell on Earth. Revelation 21:4 promises that someday God will wipe every tear from our eyes and the old order of things will pass away. I’m beginning to think that this promise isn’t so far away: it’s just waiting for us at the next stop. Maybe when we die we trade our tears for dancing and enter Heaven. Until then, I'm going to paint, I'm going to write, and I'm going to share when I find hope in this life. That's why I'm here at Journey on Canvas.
