We now find ourselves waiting in a new unknown. There are wars and rumors of more wars. A new variant looms in the distance. I once again recoil to my studio and manage my anxieties in this new liminal in-between. I paint sunflowers, doors to magical places, and portals to peaceful, quiet spaces. I share this work, and I invite people to share in my process. Painting the journey in the new unknown becomes a salve for them and for me. I have made friends with people I have never physically met. I have bonded with them. We have shared our stories. Art is the impetus for all this dialogue. I have reimagined my entire sense of community through creative exchange. To my surprise, much of this is done virtually. Despite distance, dividedness, and disconnectedness, creative process joins me with others in the present moment. In the disquieting of our new, liminal moments, art is bringing us into a conversation that releases hope and lets us find common ground.
  • Art Brings Connectedness.
Painting the journey in the new unknown brings people together. From within liminal moments, we find that we are not alone. How can your creative process spark conversation, release hope, and help draw people into community? The future is unknown and our journey is constantly unfolding. Art provides a way for us to sit with others in the present moment. Together, we can find understanding and conectedness.  We do not need to sit in the in-between in isolation. We can join with people we have never physically met. We can bond with them. We can share our stories. Art is the spark for this connection. We can make our sense of community richer and more alive through creative exchange. Creative process joins us with others in the present moment.
This painting of the journey in the new unknown is of of underwater doors, sunflowers, and a water spigot surrounded by bubbles and swirling fish.
My paintings are my portals to peaceful, quiet spaces when I can’t even leave my home. I paint the water spigot and the door from under water in this endemic world. I once again recoil to my studio and manage my anxieties in this new liminal in-between. Painting the journey in the new unknown centers me and brings surprising calm.

tears for dancing

Tears for Dancing, Age 42

The older I get the less I think about what I can get out of this life. Bad things happen here on Earth and no one is immune. I see my parents suffering, I watch terrible things happen to my friends and I see catastrophic events that create hell on Earth. Revelation 21:4 promises that someday God will wipe every tear from our eyes and the old order of things will pass away. I’m beginning to think that this promise isn’t so far away: it’s just waiting for us at the next stop. Maybe when we die we trade our tears for dancing and enter Heaven. Until then, I'm going to paint, I'm going to write, and I'm going to share when I find hope in this life. That's why I'm here at Journey on Canvas.
